I went there on Sunday afternoon around 3pm. I ordered Asam Laksa, Hokkien Noodles, Satay, and some kind of deep fried pork thingy. Satay was tasty and moist. Not dry or chewy at all. Asam Laksa was so and so. Hokkien Noodles was just right. The pork was drowned with some kind of sweet sauce which overpowered the overall taste of the pork. I had to order rice in order to finish the pork. The Asam Laksa was slightly on the watery side but I can still taste the tangy fishy taste as it should be. That was actually the first time I ordered satay in many years. Why?...because I know it will never be as good as the one I would get in Malaysia. Nevertheless, I was surprised on how sweet and succulent all the meat were. Quite happy with the food and went home happy. Total cost was $32 for 2 people. Would I recommend this place to everyone? sure, just don't expect a fine dining type of service.

The fashion industry is taking it to the streets. From New York City's Herald Square to Times Square, 32 full-on decked out mannequins can be seen "working it" along Broadway Avenue. The public art installation called "Sidewalk Catwalk" and designers involved include Tommy Hilfiger, Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, John Bartlett, Maria Cornejo, Carlos Falchi, Prabal Gurung, Norma Kamali, Nanette Lepore, Rebecca Moses, Yeohlee Teng, Carmen Marc Valvo...just to name a few. Sorry but Kadazan Man was too lazy to figure who did which mannequin. Enjoy!

Went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to check out an installation called "Big Bambu" which is made entirely from bamboo in the form of a cresting wave rising as high as... 50 feet above the roof of the museum. It is an ongoing construction that started from April 27 through Oct. 31 created by twin artists Mike and Doug Starn. It is supposed to be part sculpture, part architecture and part performance.

finally got some time to take pics and start updating my blog page agtain. spring semester will be done by next week. 2 weeks off then summer session will begin where i will be teaching 2 nights in a week for 6 weeks. then will be free again until september. in meantime, did some shopping today and getting ready for summer outdoor cooking.

saw this at the store and looking forward to have lemang with my rendang.

this is probably the best tasting canned satay sauce out there.
i know i should make it from scratch but just couldn't be bothered
to get all the ingredients together.

last but not least, a staple in every asians household all around the world.
just in case i mess up, couple teaspoon of aji-no-moto will do the job.

saw some rambutan sold in the store. haven't had this for
like 10 years. it was about $7 per-lb. alang-alang tidak kempunan,
i picked 6 pieces of them and it cost me about $2.50.
i remember those days when i used to get sick of them because
they were simply too many at the house.
now i have to be picky and think twice of getting them.

dragged my sick arse out of bed this evening to take pics of the Empire State building doing their thing for the Earth Hour. watched the lights turned off from the 40th street stop on the number 7 train.
then headed to Gantry State Park to watch it turned back on.

then i realized that something else came back on right next to me. it was the famous pepsi-cola sign that used to be on top of a bottling factory not far from the park. i think the factory was shut down in 1999 and the building was demolished. however, the city wanted to keep the iconic symbol and transferred it to its current location. pretty cool. have to drop by some other day when the weather is a bit warmer and check it out . it was a bit chilly out there tonight.

lately i've been salivating for salted fish with pineapple. plus i am looking for a dish to cook for easter dinner next weekend. mom told that she cooked it this past christmas and been thinking about it ever since. so, i gave it try today. it was good but i think the salted fish is a bit strong. next time , i'll cut the salted fish slightly smaller and more vege like bamboo shots or jack fruit.

went to the gym last saturday. talk about getting fat, when i was done, i felt like having a bowl of fried noodles in chinatown. i just burned few calories but was just about to add couple hundred more. nonetheless, i went for it and had the best greasy, choked with overcooked vegetable bowl of fried noodles. was just about to get into subway to go home when i saw williamsburg bridge and decided to burn off the fried noodles by crossing over the east river on foot.

its that time of the year again. time to wipe off the dust and fire up the oven. cooked pork tenderloin in the oven for the first time in my life. seriously. it came out better than i thought. note the chopped potatoes and zuchini underneath the meat. thinking about roasting them while cooking the meat. that didn't come out good. need to cut it in bigger chunks and let it stay longer in the oven.

didn't feel well this past week. not sure whether it was cold or flu, or even swine flu. didn't go to work on monday. wished i could stay home longer but just couldn't do it this week what with the midterm and many other things. was able to sustain myself by swallowing everything below. and thanks to companies like cottonelle for inventing product such as wet tissues or else my nose would be red like rudolf the red nose reindeer. i didn't exactly use cottonelle at work but some baby wipes made from bamboo. all i can say whatever is good for baby's butt is good for my nose too. anyway, its been a week and still not 100% well yet. hopefully it well wear off in the next few days.

so, i went to the polo again this past weekend. during half time, I walked across the field just to take pics of the “important” people in the main tent. I was taking pics when a lady came to me and asked which famous celebrity I was looking at under the tent. Told her that I have no clue and was just taking pics of random people. Then she spotted jon from jon & kate plus 8. jon who happened to look toward our direction actually waved at us. Without wasting any time, I was doing my paparazzi bit. Boy, how he love the attention. he actually put his shades on, walked toward the fence and stood there until the other real paparazzi saw him. I think he just arrived at the polo when we first saw him few moments before. and yes, that was lindsay lohan’s father standing right next to him.

Went to moma yesterday to check this exhibit by an artist called song dong. To make a long story short, song dong was born in Beijing on the eve of the cultural revolution. Mother came from a wealthy family whose relative was jailed as an anti-communist spy. Parents adhered to the cultural revolutionary dictum of frugality in daily. Let’s just say that the mother somewhat over did it. When the mother died in 2006, song dong decided, instead of destroying what his late mother has collected, he decided to lay it all out as art exhibit. Believe it or not, the mother supposed stacked everything into the tiny shack that can be seen in the first picture.

i know i have my supply of belacan some where in the kitchen cabinet but never bother to look for it, until yesterday. it was in wrapped in few bahai bags and packed in a plastic container. i think i bought it a year or two ago. hope it is still ok. it looks ok to me and man! the smell of it. have to polish my sambal belacan making skill soon. may have to toast it outside on the grill though. or else i'll stink up the whole house.

the reason why i am looking for it is because i wanted to make ikan bakar using banana leaves. and yes, they do sell them here. i am trying to follow the recipe from internet. i made the spice paste but it doesn't sound like the way we make it back home. couldn't find of any better fish to use so i picked salmon. meant to grill it outside yesterday but it was raining so i have to do today. the chinese supermarket didn't have galanga so i decided to use powder galanga i have at the house. too lazy to walk to the bangladeshi supermarket to find galanga. oh and i decided to use crushed chillies instead of dried chillies. again just couldn't be bothered to walk over to the indian store. i also bought dried shrimp. haven't had this for years. will add it to my fried rice the next time i make some.

Spice Paste
1 clove garlic

3 shallots

6 dried chillies

1 tablespoon of turmeric powder

1/4 teaspoon of toasted belacan

2 inches of lemon grass (white part only)

1 inch of galangal1/4 teaspoon sugar1/8 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon of

tablespoon of lemon juice

Method:
Using a mortar and pestle or food processor, blend the spice paste.
Clean the fish and pat dry. Coat the fish with the spice paste evenly and wrap it with banana leaves. Use toothpicks to hold the banana leaves so the fish is wrapped tightly. Leave the parcel in the refrigerator and marinate overnight.
Heat up your grill and grill the fish parcel for 5 minutes on each site (or until the banana leaves are burnt).

my laptop went back to the repair shop again on monday, and finally got it back today. nothing serious this time but just a bit of tweaking. hopefully i wouldn't get any more virus attack on my laptop. anyway, went to check out the city's new attraction in chelsea with my students. basically, its an old elevated rail line that was turned into public park which stretches around 8 blocks from 23rd street in chelsea to gansevoort street in the meatpacking district. it was officially opened just last week.

garbage collection day on my street in queens is every tuesday and thursday. tuesday is also the day when they collect all the recyclable materials. don't know how they do in sandakan now (kadazanman's hometown), here we normally put them out on the curb the night before they come and collect the garbage. and yes, you have to separate them all.
whereas in long island, you also have to separate your trash but pack your household refuse in special green bags, load them in your car and then bring them to a dumping area. then at the dumping area, you have to unload them all and place them in a respective compactor. the green bags are not that cheap. i think its about us$15 or us$20 for one roll which contains about 5 or 6 bags. so, the trick is to squeeze as much household trash as possible in the green bags using whatever ways you can. apa boleh buat, mahal bah itu bahai hijau!!!

went to checkout plants at a local garden nursery. never been to one back home, or i probably did and just never pay attention to anything to it but this is how they do it here. i remember back home when you see something that you like out in your uncle or aunt's yard, they simply pull it out from the ground and give it to you. then you have to keep your finger cross that the plant will survive when you plant it in your own yard. whereas here you simply pick any plant that you like, almost fully grown, take them home and three months later, it is still alive.

bikes and church

someone gave me a pamphlet about the 11th blessing of the bikes at the cathedral of st. john the divine. apparently this is like a yearly thing where people would bring their bikes, scooter, roller blades etc. and have the priest bless them all. i guess for protection or buang pahala lah kot. at the beginning of the ceremony, everybody gathered at the front of the church and then slowly entered the church in a procession with their bikes. during the ceremony, they also read out names of bike riders who died in an accident in the past years, which i thought was a nice thing to do. don't think i'll be seeing this kind of thing happening in malaysia any time soon. oh, and by the way, the ceremony was open to any body from any religious background. p/s...make sure you check out the video i took from the ceremony in bikes & church - part 2.

just to recap, the following are the churches that i went to during the holy week. pictures borrowed from various sources except for the resurrection and ascension church, rego park, new york.

for palm sunday, i went to resurrection and ascension church, rego park. its about 5 blocks away from my house. so, i can just basically walk to church 10 mins before mass begins. its like your neighbourhood church and always packed with people from the surrounding areas and some familiar faces that i have seen around where i live. oh, and i also went there for good friday.
whereby for holy thursday, i went to university parish of st. joseph church near new york university. it is located in west village and mostly caters students at nyu and the surrounding neighbourhood. its a small church but something about it that makes you feel comfortable sitting in through mass. the church has a good choir too and that is why i went there on holy thursday.
and for easter mass this evening, i went st. patrick's cathedral. its a huge and beautiful church but the thing i hate about going there is the presence of tourists and visitors to the church. so, you don't get that feeling of going to a mass and always feels like i am rushed through the mass. nonetheless, i decided to go there since i got up late this morning and decided to take it easy today and maybe do some work. but of course, i didn't get any work done. located on fifth avenue and it is also the largest gothic style in the country. the inside ornaments and design is simply outstanding.

mamak place

this is your typical mamak place-new york style. its alway run by indian guys, pakistani, bangladeshi or moroccan maybe. however, there is something about this particular mamak place that i don't understand. eventhough there are other mamaks at this particular corner but the line to this particular stall is always a mile long and there will be nobody at the other place. i bought their rice and beef but seriously there's not much different compared to the others. they are like that the soup nazi in seinfield. but hey, at least i know its halal:)

following are some of the typical price you have to pay when going out to eat in any malaysian restaurant in new york. as far as i know, waktu duduk di malaysia dulu lima belas tahun yang lalu, i honestly never had fried rice with salted fish. rice with salted fish on the side adalah. pineapple fried rice? where do they come up with this recipe and consider it as malaysian food. nonetheless, the best thing is that kangkung belacan is about $9.95. dulu-dulu i remember kita pegi petik kangkung di tepi longkang or di belakang rumah for free. but now, i have to pay rm40 for a plate of kangkung.

few signs that spring is here. daylight saving time begins for most of the united states at 2 am on the second sunday of march. plus spring officially starts on march 20. daylight is getting longer and temperature hovers around 50F/7C, and plants just can't wait to push their buds out.

happened to pass by time square just before 8.30 last night while on my way out for dinner. time square was as busy and hectic as usual with probably couple thousands more who were probably there to wait for the earth hour. stood at he corner of 49th street and broadway. 8.30 came and nothing happened. seriously, nothing. ok, yeah sure the Coca-Cola sign, the Chase banking group and the Nasdaq stock exchange board went dark. or maybe the united nation building, or empire state building which i heard went dark too. but seriously, last night was a joke. i mean if they really to get the message through rather than just a symbolic gesture. just turn it off . and maybe, just maybe, people will take note. just by turning off one or two jumbo screen here and there hardly made any impression at all. i walked away ashamed of myself.

just another day in new york and more interesting things to read in the new york post's nypd daily blotter. the naked cowboy singing with his guitar right in the middle of times square seems pale in comparison to things happening around nyc;-

Manhattan

* Police are hunting the Gramercy Park bank bandit who fled empty-handed when a teller ignored him.

The robber walked into the Bank of America branch on Sixth Avenue near West 27th Street at 1:30 p.m. on March 7 and slipped a demand note to a teller.

The bank employee simply stepped away, and the nonplussed bandit fled, police said.

Queens

* An estranged spouse was busted after he called his wife in St. Albans and threatened to kill her, authorities said.

James Green, 44, called his wife both at home and on her cellphone on March 1 and threatened her, according to court papers.

Cops on Tuesday arrested Green.

* A 22-year-old man was busted for sticking up a South Ozone Park grocery store with two masked accomplices, police said.

Jay Jackson, 22, stormed into the Jassi convenience store on Lefferts Boulevard near 115th Avenue shortly before midnight on March 6 with two partners in crime, cops said.

Jackson stood by the door while one of the men grabbed the clerk and pulled a gun, sources said.

A third masked accomplice jumped over the counter and rifled the cash register, and all three escaped with an undisclosed sum of money.

Cops busted Jackson Tuesday. The accomplices were still on the loose last night.

Brooklyn

* A man was shot dead outside a Crown Heights housing project early yesterday.

The 38-year-old victim, who lived in Queens, was found with neck and chest bullet wounds after gunfire erupted on Dean Street near Troy Avenue outside the Weeksville Gardens Houses shortly before 3 a.m., police said.

A grocery store owner died yesterday after he was jumped by two masked thugs in a Brooklyn parking garage, sources said.

Vladislav Tolstykh, 34, pulled into the lot on Brighton 11th Street near his shop, Brighton Bazaar, at around 2:30 p.m. when he was attacked, cops said.

He was rushed to Coney Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Investigators were checking out people who knew Tolstykh's routine, because he carried as much as $20,000 to work on Saturdays, the sources said.

Detectives did not find money on the Woodmere, LI, resident's body and it was unclear how much he had been carrying.

* A tenant was busted after he slugged his female landlord in the face during an argument over the alleged lack of heat at his Bushwick apartment, cops said.

Angel Rivera, 35, on March 5 complained to the landlord of the building on Stockholm Street near Irving Avenue, police said.

The landlord visited at 10:30 p.m. to inspect the problem and found Rivera in the basement tinkering with the boiler, said cops.

She confronted him and, after a brief argument, he took a swing, sources said.

Rivera surrendered to 83rd Precinct cops Thursday, said a spokesman for DA Charles Hynes.
